On the UK Royal Navy’s HMS Prince of Wales, a unique addition has caught everyone’s attention: a state-of-the-art eSports suite designed for the crew’s entertainment. This innovative space was established in February as part of a collaboration between the Royal Navy and the British eSports Federation.
The eSports suite is equipped with 12 top-of-the-line Alienware Aurora R15 gaming desktop PCs, boasting powerful RTX 4080 graphics cards and Core i7 CPUs. These systems are not limited to basic eSports titles and are complemented by LED lighting, a widescreen TV, and ergonomic office chairs.
Martin Miller, the ship’s Chief Petty Officer and vice-chairman of the Royal Navy’s eSports committee, oversees the operations of the gaming room. He mentioned his fondness for playing Civilization VI in the air-conditioned suite after his work hours, highlighting the unique PC setup that distinguishes it from other ships with console gaming setups.
The primary objective of this facility is to enhance the crew’s onboard experience and promote social interactions during the ship’s extensive eight-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific region. Officers and leaders schedule the suite for their teams regularly, while sailors use it spontaneously every evening while at sea, fostering camaraderie across ranks.
The Royal Navy plans to host a launch event and an international tournament in the eSports suite, with upcoming leagues organized in collaboration with Royal Navy eSports. However, due to limited internet connectivity at sea, the crew engages in local multiplayer games like Halo and Team Fortress 2.
In a significant move, the UK Ministry of Defence officially recognized eSports as a military sport in March 2024, granting it the same status as conventional sports such as shooting and rugby. This recognition aims to attract and retain young talent, particularly for roles in cyber defense and technology-focused positions, aligning with the government’s recruitment strategy to integrate gamers into cybersecurity roles.
The integration of eSports facilities on naval vessels signifies a broader acceptance of gaming culture within traditionally conservative environments. By embracing eSports, the Royal Navy not only enhances the crew’s morale and well-being but also demonstrates a progressive approach to engaging with modern technologies and attracting diverse talent pools.
