Greyhound racing offers win, place and each-way betting plus the full exotic menu. Races are short and box draws are decisive, which makes the dogs the most volatile of the three codes — margins between a winning and losing bet are often a single bump at the first turn. That volatility is exactly why staking discipline matters most here.
Exotic bets
Quinella — pick the runners finishing 1st and 2nd in either order. Exacta — same two placings, but the order must be exact, so it pays more and lands less. Duet — pick any two runners to both finish in the placings, order irrelevant; one of Australia's most popular exotics because it forgives near-misses.
Trifecta — 1st, 2nd and 3rd in exact order. First Four — the first four home in exact order, where the dividends get genuinely large. Both can be "boxed" (every order combination covered) at a multiplied stake, or "flexi" bet at a percentage of the full unit.
Multi-race bets
Running double — winners of two consecutive races. Daily double — winners of two nominated races. Treble — three consecutive winners. Quaddie — winners of four nominated races, the classic Saturday bet, with an early quaddie covering four races earlier in the meeting. Big 6 — six winners; brutally hard, but the pools are large for exactly that reason. An all-up rolls winnings from one race into the next, which is effectively a multi.
Price types and the tote
Fixed-odds bets lock your price at bet time. Top Fluc pays the highest official fluctuation in the on-course market, and Starting Price (SP) pays the official odds at the jump. Tote (parimutuel) betting works differently again: all stakes go into a pool, the operator takes its commission, and the dividend depends entirely on how everyone else bet. Small pools can mean your own bet moves the dividend.
The strategy reality
Exotics pay big because they're hard and because the house percentage on exotic pools is meaningfully higher than win/place pools. Most long-term profitable racing punters build their results on disciplined win and each-way betting at value prices, and treat exotics as a small, strictly-budgeted slice of the bankroll — entertainment with upside, not the engine of profit.
