Gaming organization Pwr is gearing up to unveil a groundbreaking three-part documentary series that delves into the realms of esports and content creation. Titled “Making of a Champion,” the documentary promises an exclusive peek into the flourishing gaming and content creation industry. Spearheaded by Australian Gaming and Content organization PWR, the project is the brainchild of director Oliver Marshall and has received support from Screen Australia and YouTube Australia through the Skip Ahead initiative.
The documentary showcases pivotal narratives revolving around PWR founder Lachlan Power, Australia’s premier gaming YouTuber to hit the 10 million subscriber mark, alongside emerging YouTube sensation Alex Richmond. The series also spotlights Australia’s top Fortnite players, including Austin ‘Worthy’ King, Sebastian ‘Looter’ Olle, and Baran ‘Volx’ Ercan from the PWR Fortnite roster, in addition to appearances by Kathleen ‘Loserfruit’ Belsten and Lannan ‘Lazarbeam’ Eacott.
Set against the backdrop of 2024, “Making of a Champion” shadows the PWR Fortnite Team as they chase glory at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh and the Fortnite Global Championships, where the world’s elite Fortnite players vie for supremacy.
Director of narrative content at Screen Australia, Louise Gough, expressed enthusiasm for the documentary’s potential to offer audiences a captivating glimpse into the expanding domain of esports and gaming, intertwined with elements of camaraderie, competition, and family dynamics that resonate with viewers on YouTube.
Lachlan Power, the executive producer of PWR, emphasized the exponential growth of the gaming and digital content creation industry over the past decade, underscoring the lack of comprehensive portrayals of this flourishing sector. He highlighted the documentary’s role in shedding light on the inner workings of the gaming and content creation sphere, providing valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of the industry.
With the aspiration of becoming a ‘YouTuber or TikToker’ ranking high among young individuals today, the documentary serves as a gateway to understanding the nuances of Fortnite competitive gaming and content creation, offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape of digital entertainment and gaming.
YouTube Australia’s head, Ed Miles, commended the evolution of gaming on the platform, citing its role as a pivotal hub for immersive storytelling and hosting major esports events. The support for the “Making of a Champion” series through Skip Ahead underscores YouTube’s commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives that inspire the next generation of storytellers.
Director Oliver Marshall expressed his intent to illuminate a fresh facet of PWR and the esports milieu through the documentary, aiming to resonate with both PWR’s fan base and parents. By narrating the journey of individuals pursuing careers in content creation and professional gaming, the series seeks to spark dialogues on supporting young talents venturing into these domains.
“Making of a Champion” is scheduled for release on PWR’s YouTube channel, with the first episode premiering on June 26, followed by subsequent episodes on June 28 and June 30. The series promises to offer viewers a rare glimpse into the dynamic world of esports and gaming, presenting unique perspectives that encapsulate the essence of this burgeoning industry.
