This initiative stems from a submission made by Jake Minear, a concerned businessman, suggesting that online betting platforms should provide users with real-time information about their financial standing, akin to a bank balance.
The prevalence of online gambling in Australia dates back to 1996, with the emergence of Centrebet. However, regulations were not implemented until 2001, leading to significant financial losses incurred annually by individuals, particularly those who are financially vulnerable. Despite efforts to address the adverse effects of online gambling, such as a bipartisan parliamentary committee’s recommendations to ban sports betting advertising, the industry continues to thrive, with a reported increase in risky betting behavior among the population.
The proposed bill, titled the “Interactive Gambling Amendment (Know Your Losses Activity Statement) Bill 2025,” mandates that online betting platforms prominently display users’ net losses and wins for specific timeframes. This measure aims to provide users with a clear understanding of their gambling expenditure, similar to checking a bank account balance before making financial decisions. By enhancing transparency, individuals may become more cognizant of their losses and potentially reconsider their gambling habits.
While Sharkie’s bill represents a step towards addressing problem gambling, comprehensive solutions are necessary to combat the broader challenges posed by online betting. Prohibiting advertising, as recommended by previous inquiries, and discouraging the integration of odds in sports fixtures are additional measures that could contribute to mitigating the negative impacts of online gambling. Current strategies, such as post-advertisement messages encouraging responsible gambling, have shown limited effectiveness in curbing excessive betting behavior.
Online gambling is identified as the fourth major issue affecting Australian sports, following historical challenges with tobacco, alcohol, and fast foods.
