Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s annual eSports Day brought over 20 students together for a day of gaming and community. The event, held in the school gym, aimed to revive the spirit of LAN parties from the early 2000s, offering a unique social gaming experience.
Despite the prevalence of online gaming, the in-person event emphasized the joy of gathering, sharing screens, and supporting fellow players. Students paid a $35 entry fee, which included access to various tournaments, meals, and passes to The Game Expo 2026.
Attendees also had the chance to enjoy VR stations, Nintendo Switch games, and a retro arcade area. A highlight of the day was the “Snack Drone” dropping chip packets into the crowd during matches, adding a fun twist to the competition.
Coordinator Will Lees emphasized that the event was not just about competition but about fostering connections among students of different ages, allowing them to bond over their shared love for gaming and create lasting memories together.
The eSports Day featured popular competitions such as Rocket League, Fortnite, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Diabotical. Prizes included new controllers, gaming mice, keyboards, and accessories, with a total value of around $600, sponsored by Johnstone Electrical and Sunvalley Solar, along with contributions from staff members.
Event organizers, including Will Lees, Brendon Taylor, and Justin Tate from Lanslide and The Game Expo, ensured a smooth and engaging experience for all participants. The day culminated in prize distributions to winners in various gaming categories, with every participant receiving a double pass to The Game Expo 2026.
The success of the GSSC eSports Day 2025 underscores the growing popularity of eSports and the importance of fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among gamers. Events like these not only provide a platform for friendly competition but also promote social interaction and teamwork among students.
