Denmark saw a significant increase in gambling revenue in April, with online casino emerging as the primary driver behind this growth. Data from the regulator Spillemyndigheden revealed that the total gambling revenue for the month reached DKK665 million, marking an 11.6% increase compared to the same period last year, surpassing the revenue generated in March as well.
The online casino sector played a pivotal role in this revenue surge, contributing DKK331 million, a notable 21.4% increase from April 2024. Slot machines dominated the online casino revenue share, followed by blackjack and roulette, with the remaining portion distributed among poker, bingo, and other games.
In parallel, sports betting revenue also witnessed a year-on-year increase of 6.1%, totaling DKK207 million in April. Notably, mobile betting accounted for the majority of this revenue, with desktop computers and betting shops making up the rest.
On the flip side, the land-based gambling sector faced some challenges, with slot machine revenue declining by 3.6% compared to the previous year. Slot machines in gambling halls garnered the most revenue, with restaurant machines contributing a smaller share. Land-based casino revenue also dipped by 2.5% year-on-year, although it was the best monthly performance since December of the previous year.
Moreover, the regulatory body Spillemyndigheden provided insights into the country’s ROFUS national self-exclusion program. As of April, over 60,000 individuals had registered for the scheme, with the majority opting for permanent exclusion. The agency also reported that StopSpillet, a support service for gambling-related concerns, received 50 calls during April.
These figures indicate a shifting landscape in Denmark’s gambling industry, with online casino and sports betting driving revenue growth while land-based establishments face challenges. The increasing participation in self-exclusion programs highlights the importance of responsible gambling initiatives in the evolving gaming landscape.
